DDPG Legislative Activity Award

A. Purpose: To recognize a DDPG member who has served well in nutrition related public policy activities.

B. Eligibility: All active DDPG members except previous winners of the Legislative Activity Award, Awards Committee members, current Public Policy Committee Chair, DDPG Chair, DDPG Chair-elect and Executive Committee members.

  1. DDPG Committee Chairs and Executive Committee members are not eligible for the stipend.

Additionally, any person who has attended the Academy's Nutrition and Dietetics Advocacy Summit with DDPG sponsored funds within the last 3 years is not eligible. This is a one time award and cannot be nominated again for the same award.

C. Selection Process and Criteria:

  1. Written nominations of eligible DDPG members for the Legislative Activity Award can be submitted by any member of DDPG, including one's self.

  2. Nominees will be contacted by the Awards Committee Assistant Chair and asked to complete a Legislative Activity Award application. Nominees will submit a completed electronic award application and curriculum vitae to support their nominations.

  3. Nominees will be considered for this award based on:

  • Providing leadership to other DDPG members on legislative matters.

  • Contacting legislators and their staff by letter, phone, fax, or personal visit.

  • Testifying at a legislative hearing.

  • Participating in political activities such as volunteering in a political campaign or registering people to vote.

  • Using information gained at the Nutrition and Dietetics Advocacy Summit to further nutrition and diabetes-related legislation.

D. Entry Deadline: All nominations must be received by February 15th.

E. The Award: A commemorative plaque and a $2,000 cash award, which may to be used to fund the winner's trip to the Academy's Nutrition and Dietetics Advocacy Summit or to Academy's Food & Nutrition Conference & ExpoTM(FNCE)®.  The winner is responsible for any taxes associated with the cash award.

F. Composition of the Awards Committee:The Awards committee will be composed of an Awards Committee Chair, Assistant Chair, and appointed members who will act as judges.  The Awards Committee Chair and Assistant Chair will be responsible for receiving entries and will provide anonymity to the Awards Committee process.

G. Award Committee Procedures:

  1.  Nominations will be submitted to the Awards Committee Chair by February 15th.

  2. Upon receipt of a nomination, the Assistant Chair will mail to the nominee a letter informing him/her of the nomination, the award application and personal information forms, instructions, and the date by which materials must be returned for judging.

  3. Judging will be performed independently by non-chair members of the committee. The Assistant Chair will provide each judge with a complete and anonymous set of information submitted by each nominee, evaluation criteria for judging the award and a scoring composite sheet.  A deadline will be specified by which score sheets must be returned to the Assistant Chair.

  4. The Assistant Chair will tally the judges' score sheets and submit the name of the winner to the Chair of the Awards Committee and the DDPG Administrative Manager. In the case of a tie, the Awards Committee Chair, DDPG Chair and Chair-Elect will cast three extra and deciding votes.

  5. The Awards Committee Chair will notify the winning nominee by telephone prior to the Awards Ceremony at either the Nutrition and Dietetics Advocacy Summit or FNCE®. It is expected that the winner will attend the meeting, where he/she will receive the cash award.

  6. The Awards Committee Chair will notify all the nominees by mail prior to any public announcement of the award.
