Gestational Diabetes: Challenges and Opportunities

Gestational Diabetes: Challenges and Opportunities

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) prevalence continues to increase among women in the US, which has significant long-term impact on the healthcare system as women are at significantly higher risk for type 2 diabetes. Studies show that many women do not receive postpartum care and health behavior is not sustained long term. The Registered Dietitian-Nutritionist (RDN) has a unique opportunity to provide evidence based medical nutrition therapy to manage GDM as well as taking an expanded role in postpartum care coordination. This presentation will highlight the current evidence-based guidelines from the Evidence Analysis Library, current practices of dietitians working in GDM care, and opportunities to increase the role of the RDN. The presentation will address the value of increasing knowledge, confidence, and care coordination to address postpartum follow up.
