In this month's podcast, we interview Janice MacLeod, MA, RDN, CDCES, FADCES, chair of the Diabetes DPG.  Janice passionately describes the webinars, new alliances and task forces, and the Diabetes DPG publications (as well as plans to work towards making Cutting Edge Diabetes Nutrition and Care a searchable journal).

Janice also describes ways members can become involved and elevate their profession and practice with the Diabetes DPG.  



Interview with Shamera Robinson, Diversity Liaison for Diabetes DPG

Shamera Robinson, MPH, RDN, CDCES, Diabetes DPG Diversity Liaison, shares about current Diabetes DPG initiatives to increase cultural humility and cultural competency, as well as creating safe and nurturing spaces for our members and the community we serve. Initiatives include Webinar Series exploring cultural food ways and choices, round table discussion, the Diabetes DPG Book Club and a future Diversity Committee being formed. The next Diabetes Book Club, using the book A Practice Beyond Cultural Humility: How Clinicians Can Work More Effectively In a Diverse World, will be Wednesday, April 21st 7-9 p.m. E.T. sign up here.

Elevating our Profession with Amanda Kirpatch, Policy & Advocacy Leader

Amanda Kirpitch, MA, RDN, CDCES, CDN, Diabetes DPG's Policy and Advocacy Leader, discusses current Academy initiatives that can elevate our profession and create change in access to MNT. Topics include Academy Action Alerts, Federal Impact Story Collection, licensure resources for states including incident reports, Nutrition and Dietetics Advocacy Summit in July 2021 and scholarships for our members, as well as steps to become involved and advocate for our profession.  Amanda is a motivating resource to help our voices be heard! 




Reimbursement Resources with Jason Roberts and Diabetes DPG Save the Dates

Jason Roberts is the new Nutrition Services Payment Specialist for the Diabetes DPG and helps Registered Dietitians in our DPG with resources and reimbursement.  His role with Diabetes DPG drives what and how we are getting paid, as well as increasing access for patients to see a Registered Dietitian for medical nutrition therapy.

Jason discusses resources for reimbursement, including the MNT Provider, a monthly newsletter specifically tailored for registered dietitian nutritionists. The MNT Provider includes articles on topics such as billing, coding and coverage, CMS updates and releases, practice and business management, health care reform, Medicare, Medicaid and private insurance reimbursement, and is free to Academy members. Other resources are available at the Diabetes DPG website under professional resources, then payment.

We are very excited to offer this pending CEU learning opportunity to you.  Our book club will be a two-part series: 1) laying the foundation where we can make shifts in our thinking and actions relating to racism and 2) how to apply what we learned to our clinical practice.

Kendi about their collaboration and what Stamped means to them as pre-work prior to our discussion.  I will send a list of discussion questions on February 1st prior to our virtual meeting. 
 
The second book will be A Practice Beyond Cultural Humility: How Clincians Can Work More Effectively In A Diverse World.  Dates and Times of next meeting will be voted on February 17th after our Book Club Discussion.

House of Delegates Fall 2020 Update

The 105th Fall 2020 House of Delegates Meeting occurred through a virtual format on October 15th and 16th. The focus of the meeting was a Systems Approach to Accelerating Nutrition and Health Equity. This podcast episode focuses on the House Of Delegates goals, agenda and dialogue. Additional opportunities to learn about Diversity and Inclusion and our own Bias are also described.

     

The Academy's Foundation and the Diabetes DPG Karen Goldstein Memorial Grant for Diabetes MNT

Today's Delegate Podcast focuses on the philanthropic arm of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetic's Foundation. The Foundation is the only charitable organization dedicated exclusively to promoting nutrition and dietetics. Hope Warshaw, RD, CDCES, BC-ADM explains the philanthropy of the Foundation and how it empowers current and future food sand nutrition practitioners. Recent Karen Goldstein Memorial Grant recipient Kerri Lynn Knippen, PhD, MPH, RDN/LD, BC-ADM is interviewed and describes her exciting work in gestational diabetes and perinatal outcomes.
