Bringing the ADA Standards of Diabetes Care to Life for Dietitians

The ADA Standards of Care are updated every year and provide the diabetes community with an excellent reference on the most current research and recommendations for optimal diabetes care and management. This session will provide Registered Dietitian Nutritionists with a baseline of knowledge on how to utilize guidelines in the provision of their own evidence-based practices.  The presenters will share their experiences working with the ADA Professional Practice Committee and how the guidelines are updated, developed and approved by consensus every year.

Mary Lou PerryMary Lou Perry, MS, RD, CDCES

Mary Lou Perry works as an RDN/CDCES at a collaborative diabetes/cardiovascular practice at University of Virginia. She has over 30 years of practice in chronic disease including diabetes. Her interests include: weight inclusive care, non-diet approaches, motivational interviewing using a low tech high touch approaches and educating clinicians on person-centered language and diabetes as well as Standards of Care. She is active in the DPG now serving as Chair of the Print Committee. One of her biggest professional accomplishments and “pinch me” moments is serving on the Professional Practice Committee of the ADA from 2022-2024.




SashaSacha Uelmen, RDN, CDCES

Sacha graduated from the University of Michigan with a BA in Sociology and later completed her Nutrition & Dietetics BS degree at Eastern Michigan University. She began her diabetes focused career at the University of Michigan Health System providing medical nutrition therapy and diabetes education for people with diabetes. She obtained her CDE in 2010 and became the Director of the Adult Outpatient Diabetes Education Program at U of M.

In 2016, she moved to Alexandria, VA to lead the American Diabetes Association’s Nutrition Initiatives. In August of 2019 came to the Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists where she oversees DSMES Accreditation as an Accrediting Organization for CMS leading over 800 DSMES programs nationally serving over 200,000 people with diabetes every year as well as the organization’s Prevention initiatives.

  1. Describe the process, people and frequency for developing the Standards of Care for Diabetes and how to use the document in everyday practice.
  2. Summarize the areas within the Standards of Care that address the nutrition care process and related interventions and how to reference the document
  3. Implement updates to teaching and educational guidance based on the most current standards of care when counseling people with all types of diabetes.
  4. Differentiate and utilize different guidelines based on the needs of the target population.
