The approach to managing pregnancy in T1D starts with planning and managing the pregnancy.

Satish K. Garg, MBBS, MD, DM

Satish K. Garg is Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics at the Adult Clinic of the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes of the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Denver, Colorado. He joined the faculty of the Barbara Davis Center in 1992 and became the founder and director of the Adult Clinic. Dr. Garg is the Editor in chief of Diabetes Technology and Therapeutics journal since 2006 and Chair of the planning committee for Clinical Therapeutics and New Technology area for 2007 and 2008 Annual American Diabetes Associations meetings. He is the director of ATDC Diabetes Conference, in Keystone, since 2005 and helps coordinate 1-year Diabetes Fellowship at BDC/UCD.

Sarit Polsky, MD

Sarit Polsky is an Associate Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics at the University of Colorado. Dr. Polsky joined the staff at the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes in 2014 as the director of the Pregnancy and Women’s Health Clinic. Since 2015, she has received continuous funding as a principal investigator (PI)/co-investigator on numerous clinical trials evaluating advanced diabetes technology use (continuous glucose monitoring systems, insulin pumps, and artificial pancreas therapies) in pregnant women with T1D. She is the PI for the first United States study approved by the FDA to examine artificial pancreas technology in T1D pregnancies.

Christie Beatson, MS, RD, CDCES

Christie Beatson is a Registered Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Educator at the Barbara Davis Center (BDC) for Diabetes in Aurora Colorado. The BDC specializes in the care of children and adults with Type 1 diabetes. She has been at the BDC for the past 17 years and previously worked at Harbor UCLA in Torrance California. Christie is the manager of the adult clinic at the BDC and is very involved in research. She is actively involved in clinical trials in the areas of new insulin therapies, pumps and continuous glucose monitors. Christie completed her undergraduate and graduate studies at California State University at Long Beach.

  • Explain how to confirm a diagnosis of type 1 diabetes. 
  • Explain treatment options and determine overall plan for patient with adult onset type 1 diabetes.
  • Create a self-care plan for birth control or pregnancy in type 1 diabetes patients based upon patient needs.
