Strategies in the Management of Hypoglycemia

Hypoglycemia is an acute complication and significant issue for many people living with diabetes. Intensive glycemic management can increase the risk of hypoglycemia. This course will review the risks of hypoglycemia and examine its impact on the daily life of patients and their caretakers. Current treatment recommendations will be reviewed and strategies to prevent hypoglycemia will be discussed.  Successful patient education techniques will also be explored.

Liz Robinson, MSPA-C, CDCES

Liz Robinson, MSPA-C, CDCES is a physician assistant and diabetes educator with over 20 years of clinical experience.  She is currently serving as LifeScan’s Medical Safety Officer.  Liz has devoted her entire career to educating and empowering individuals living with diabetes.  Her interest began when she met her husband who has type 1 diabetes and was further fueled when her daughter was diagnosed with type 1 as well.  In addition to her professional roles, Liz also volunteers her time speaking at diabetes conferences.  Her goal is to ensure everyone living with diabetes (and their healthcare providers) have the tools necessary to help them live life to the fullest.

Mary Lou Perry, MS, RDN, CDCES

Mary Lou Perry, MS, RDN, CDCES is a registered dietitian and a certified diabetes care and education specialist. She holds degrees from Radford and Virginia Tech. She has over 30 years of experience in the diabetes space, mostly at the University of Virginia in the department of Internal Medicine as a program coordinator for an ADA-recognized program in the Endocrine department. In the last 20 years, she has been part of an innovative interprofessional collaborative diabetes/cardiometabolic practice where her skills are fully integrated into the practice setting. She is a preceptor and speaker for the University of Virginia’s dietetic internship program and has served as an advisor for several Intern Capstone projects. She has served in numerous capacities with the CBDCE (Certification Board for Diabetes Care and Education) as an exam reviewer and item writer. She has helped write items for EatRight prep, a preparation course for those re-entering practice or those qualifying for the registry exam. Mary Lou is active in the Diabetes Dietetic Practice Group and the Weight Management Practice groups of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. In 2022, she was appointed to the American Diabetes Association Professional Practice Committee. Known for her humor and innovative presentation style, she is a regular speaker at various state/affiliate diabetes and nutrition meetings.

  • Describe treatment options for each level of hypoglycemia.
  • Implement an appropriate treatment plan in managing the patient with hypoglycemia.
  • Explain the advantages and impact technology has on hypoglycemia management.
